Lagoa
(Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas)
My walk around half of the Lagoa, the place where we will see the Olympic rowboat and small sailboat races take place, began from a hostel that I carefully chose for this very location. The path led past this lovely little church. Having heard of and seen pictures of this lake's horrendous pollution problem, with Brazil promising to have it all cleaned up, I just had to see for myself. |
My first exposure was a pleasant surprise. Not only did the lake look clean, but only a very faint smell seemed to remain. Water fowl and fish were back, as were the people. What surprises is how a very nice upscale community could have let things deteriorate to such a level, while living all around in expensive apartment and homes. . |
People were walking, jogging, or biking all around the Lagoa |
This, so I understand, is the boathouse of the Botafogo soccer club. I just noticed a row of rowing machines inside. |
This tells the story of this lake and speak of its current condition. |
